Which one is right for you?

Still torn? This is how we advise guests at pickup:

  • First visit to Czechia, one free day: Cesky Krumlov, the classic for a reason.
  • Only half a day to spare: Karlstejn & Velka Amerika, back by mid-afternoon.
  • You would rather hike than sightsee: Bohemian Switzerland, no contest.
  • History that your teenagers will actually remember: Kutna Hora and the Bone Church.
  • A slow, elegant day for two: Karlovy Vary & Loket.

If this is your first trip to the Czech Republic and you only have time for one day trip, choose Cesky Krumlov (fairytale town) or Kutna Hora (the Bone Church alone makes it worth going). If you have two days, add Bohemian Switzerland for a complete contrast: dramatic nature instead of medieval architecture.

Head to head: the choices guests ask about

Kutna Hora or Cesky Krumlov?

Choose Cesky Krumlov if you can give the trip a full day, and Kutna Hora if you can spare only half of one. Cesky Krumlov is about 2.5 hours each way and the whole day runs to about 9 hours, with a stop at Hluboka Castle on the way. Kutna Hora is about 1 h 15 min from Prague and the trip takes about 4 hours door to door, with the Bone Church and the Gothic St Barbara Cathedral as its two highlights.

Karlstejn or Kutna Hora for a half day?

Take Karlstejn if you want the shortest drive and a real castle, and Kutna Hora if history interests you more than castles. Karlstejn is about 40 minutes from Prague and, with the Velka Amerika quarry, the trip takes about 5 hours; expect an uphill walk from the village to the castle. Kutna Hora is a little further at about 1 h 15 min each way, yet the trip is shorter, about 4 hours, and the walking is easy.

Karlovy Vary or Cesky Krumlov?

Pick Karlovy Vary for a slow, elegant day with little walking, and Cesky Krumlov if you want the most photogenic old town in the country and do not mind a longer drive. Karlovy Vary is about 2 hours each way and the day lasts about 8 hours, with the colonnades, the hot springs and a short climb to Loket Castle. Cesky Krumlov is about 2.5 hours each way, the day lasts about 9 hours, and its cobbled lanes and castle gardens mean more time on your feet.

Bohemian Switzerland or Karlstejn with kids?

With younger children choose Karlstejn; with active kids who enjoy a proper walk choose Bohemian Switzerland. Karlstejn is only about 40 minutes away and the whole trip, including the Velka Amerika lookout, fits into about 5 hours. In Bohemian Switzerland the trail to Pravcicka Gate climbs for about 45 minutes each way and the day lasts about 9 hours; from November to March the gate area opens Friday to Sunday only.

The five trips in detail

Cesky Krumlov & Hluboka Castle: the postcard nobody regrets

Cesky Krumlov is a small medieval town wrapped twice inside a bend of the Vltava River, crowned by the second-largest castle complex in the country and protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Climb the painted castle tower, look down at the orange rooftops circled by the river, and you will see why so many guests choose it.

It is also the longest drive of the five, about 170 km and 2.5 hours each way. Our route breaks the journey at Hluboka, a white neo-Gothic castle that looks like it escaped from a Windsor fairy tale. Expect a full day: pickup around 8:30, back in Prague by early evening.

Cesky Krumlov from the castle terraces — the Vltava wraps the old town like a moat built by nature

Three highlights:

  • The view from the castle tower over the river bend, the best panorama in Bohemia
  • Hluboka Castle photo stop, the most romantic castle exterior in the country
  • Lunch by the Vltava in the old town, with rafters drifting past your table in summer

Great for: first-time visitors, couples, photographers.

Pick something else if: you dislike longer drives or have only half a day; in July and August midday crowds are real, which is why we start early.

Time needed: full day, about 9 hours door to door. Itinerary and price: Cesky Krumlov & Hluboka Castle private trip.

Kutna Hora & the Bone Church: history with goosebumps

About 80 km east of Prague, Kutna Hora was once the silver mine that bankrolled Bohemian kings. Today its headline act is the Sedlec Ossuary, a chapel decorated with the bones of some 40,000 people, victims of plague and the Hussite wars, including a chandelier said to contain every bone in the human body.

The town itself deserves the second half of the visit: the Gothic St Barbara Cathedral, built by miners for miners, rivals anything in Prague, and the medieval lanes below it are quiet compared to the capital. It is the shortest of the five trips and our most common recommendation for travelers with only half a day.

Three highlights:

  • The Sedlec Ossuary and its bone chandelier, one of the strangest sights in Europe
  • St Barbara Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece on the UNESCO list
  • Barborska street with its baroque statues and views over the vineyards

Great for: history lovers, teenagers who think castles are boring, anyone short on time.

Pick something else if: bones genuinely unsettle you, or you want dramatic landscapes rather than towns.

Time needed: about 4 hours door to door. Details: Kutna Hora & Bone Church private trip.

Bohemian Switzerland: the wild one

About 1.5 hours north of Prague (about 110 km) the landscape suddenly stands up: sandstone towers, deep gorges and forest as far as you can see. Bohemian Switzerland National Park is home to Pravcicka Gate, the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe, at the end of a forest trail that many guests rank as the best walk of their Czech holiday.

Be honest with yourself about fitness: the path to Pravcicka Gate is uphill, about 45 minutes each way at moderate difficulty. In exchange you get the one trip of the five where nature, not architecture, is the star. In places the forest is still visibly recovering from the 2022 fire.

Three highlights:

  • Pravcicka Gate, the largest sandstone arch in Europe
  • Trail viewpoints over the Elbe Sandstone Mountains stretching into Germany
  • An early start, so you reach the gate before the crowds

Great for: hikers, families with active kids, photographers, anyone castle-fatigued.

Pick something else if: an uphill walk is not your idea of a holiday; this is a hiking day, not a strolling day.

Time needed: full day, about 9 hours door to door. Route details: Bohemian Switzerland private trip.

Karlstejn Castle & Velka Amerika: the quick classic

Forty minutes from Prague (about 30 km), Karlstejn is the castle Czech kids draw when you say the word castle. Emperor Charles IV built it in the 14th century as a vault for the imperial crown jewels, and its silhouette above the forest is one of the most photographed views in the country.

We pair it with Velka Amerika, a flooded limestone quarry nicknamed the Czech Grand Canyon, a short walk from the car to a lookout that feels nothing like Central Europe. Because the whole trip fits into about five hours, it suits travelers who want a real Czech countryside day without giving up their Prague evening.

Three highlights:

  • Karlstejn Castle, the 14th-century vault of the imperial crown jewels
  • Velka Amerika quarry lookout: turquoise water under white limestone cliffs
  • The village lane below the castle, ideal for a relaxed early lunch

Great for: families, travelers with limited time, a first taste of the countryside.

Pick something else if: you have already seen Prague Castle and want something completely different in scale.

Time needed: half day, about 5 hours door to door. Details: Karlstejn & Velka Amerika private trip.

Karlovy Vary & Loket Castle: the elegant spa day

West Bohemia does slow luxury better than anywhere else in the country. Karlovy Vary, about 130 km and 2 hours west of Prague, has been one of Europe’s great spa towns since the 18th century; Beethoven, Goethe and Russian tsars all took the waters here. You stroll the colonnades with a porcelain spa cup, tasting mineral springs that rise at temperatures between 30 °C and 73 °C.

On the way we stop in Loket, a tiny town wrapped in a river loop below a Gothic castle. Together they make the most relaxed day of the five: flat colonnades, a short climb to the castle, and the best coffee-and-cake culture outside Prague.

Three highlights:

  • The Mill Colonnade and hot spring tasting straight from the source
  • Loket Castle and its storybook town in a bend of the Ohre River
  • A wafer and coffee stop; the Karlovy Vary spa wafer is a protected local specialty

Great for: couples, older travelers, architecture fans, anyone who wants beauty without hiking boots.

Pick something else if: you need action and adrenaline; this day is deliberately slow.

Time needed: full day, about 8 hours door to door. Details: Karlovy Vary & Loket Castle private trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best day trips to take from Prague?
The five classics on this page, Cesky Krumlov, Kutna Hora, Bohemian Switzerland, Karlstejn and Karlovy Vary, cover the most popular choices: an old town, history, nature, a castle and a spa day. For more castles, WWII history, beer and wine or trips abroad, see all day trips from Prague, grouped by interest.
How far in advance should I book a day trip from Prague?
You book online yourself on the trip page or in the trip planner. There is no deposit, you pay on the day of the trip, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
Can I combine two of these day trips in one day?
Kutna Hora pairs well with Karlstejn if you start early, and Karlovy Vary naturally includes Loket. Cesky Krumlov and Bohemian Switzerland deserve a full day each; combining them would mean seeing both from the car window.
Which day trip from Prague is best with kids?
Karlstejn with the Velka Amerika lookout works for almost any age thanks to short distances. Active kids from about 8 years love Bohemian Switzerland, and teenagers consistently vote for the Bone Church in Kutna Hora.
Do these trips run year-round?
Yes, all five run in every season. In winter Karlstejn Castle opens mainly at weekends and its Chapel of the Holy Cross is closed November to April; Cesky Krumlov castle interior tours finish at the end of October; the Castle Museum and tower stay open into December. From November to March the Pravcicka Gate trail in Bohemian Switzerland opens Friday to Sunday only.
What is the difference between a private day trip and a bus tour?
A private trip picks you up at your hotel, follows your pace and can change plans on the spot: more time at a viewpoint, a lunch stop you choose, an earlier start to beat crowds. Bus tours follow a fixed schedule with fixed stops.
Is the driver also a guide?
Your driver speaks English, knows the places and helps with tickets and lunch on the spot. We can arrange a licensed guide on request: they meet you on site where available, or ride with you in the car all day (then up to 7 guests). We send you a price for your date.
