Dive into the layered history of one of Europe’s most captivating cities, followed by an encounter with the most sobering place on the continent. Kraków’s Royal Road, medieval market square, and the Jewish Kazimierz district reveal a city of extraordinary beauty and depth — a place where kings were crowned, scholars debated, and communities thrived for centuries. The afternoon takes you to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where the twentieth century’s darkest chapter unfolded. This is not an easy journey. But it is a necessary one. We travel together as witnesses, so that the weight of history carries forward. A 10–11 hour day from Prague, but one of the most meaningful we offer.

You might also enjoy: Budapest, Dresden, Vienna & Bratislava.

Stops

Kraków Old Town Overnight

Standing in the centre of Kraków’s Rynek Główny — Europe’s largest medieval market square — you understand immediately why this city is beloved by those who know Poland well. The fourteenth-century Cloth Hall still anchors the square as it did for merchants centuries ago; the twin towers of St. Mary’s Basilica frame the skyline; and every hour, a trumpeter plays the Hejnał Mariacki from the taller tower, a tradition unbroken since the Middle Ages. We walk the Royal Road from Wawel Castle down through the Old Town, tracing the path once taken by Polish kings. The castle complex — cathedral, royal chambers, and the Dragon’s Den carved into the limestone below the hill — tells the full arc of a thousand-year nation. Then we move to Kazimierz, Kraków’s historic Jewish quarter, where synagogues, narrow alleys, and thoughtful street murals document a community of 70,000 that was almost entirely erased. Schindler’s Factory stands on the far bank of the Vistula. The city holds all of this — beauty and tragedy — with extraordinary grace.

Auschwitz-Birkenau 3 h

Auschwitz-Birkenau is the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp, where over one million people — the vast majority of them Jewish — were murdered between 1940 and 1945. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage memorial and museum. We enter Auschwitz I first: the original camp, where the infamous ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ gate still stands, and where the preserved blocks document in unflinching detail the scale of what happened here. Then we move to Auschwitz II-Birkenau, two kilometres away — the immense extermination complex with its iconic gatehouse, the railway tracks leading directly to the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria, and the vast grounds where hundreds of thousands arrived and never left. Your guide walks with you through both sites, providing context and space for reflection. There is no rushing this visit. We return to Prague in the early evening, carrying what we witnessed.
