About the trip
Mělník sits at the most dramatic confluence in Bohemia — the point where the Vltava (Moldau) meets the Elbe, just 30 kilometres north of Prague. The town’s Baroque château commands a cliff-edge panorama across both rivers and the surrounding vineyard-covered hills, and beneath the château church lies one of Central Europe’s more unusual attractions: an ossuary containing the remains of over 10,000 people, arranged in the same tradition as the more famous Kutná Hora bone church.
Mělník is also the heart of Bohemia’s wine culture — the only wine region within easy reach of Prague, producing Pinot Noir and Riesling on warm south-facing slopes above the river confluence. The château’s working wine cellar offers tastings that most tourists never discover.
Kokořín Castle lies 15 kilometres further into the Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area — a region of forested sandstone valleys, scattered rock formations, and near-complete quiet. Founded in the 14th century, fallen to ruin after the Thirty Years’ War, and dramatically restored at the turn of the 20th century, it sits in a narrow valley between sandstone walls and reveals itself only around the final bend of the forest path.
The drive from Prague takes approximately 45 minutes. Mělník’s wine culture, river panorama, and underground ossuary combined with Kokořín’s fairy-tale castle and forest landscape make this one of the most varied day trips within an hour of the city.

Pricing: Car tour — price per kilometre, stops, and waiting time. Vehicle: Hyundai Staria (up to 8 passengers). Mělník Chateau guided interior tour: approx. 220 CZK/person; ossuary (church crypt): approx. 80 CZK/person. Kokořín Castle: approx. 130 CZK/person.
Tips: Mělník rewards a slow morning — the château interior tour (approx. 40 min) pairs well with a walk through the vineyard terrace and a wine tasting in the château cellar. The ossuary, entered separately through the church, takes just 15 minutes but leaves a strong impression; it is less visited and more intimate than Kutná Hora. For Kokořín, the 10-minute walk through the sandstone valley from the car park to the castle gate is part of the experience — the rock walls rise on both sides and the forest canopy closes overhead. The area is particularly beautiful during October autumn colour. Kokořínský Důl village has good traditional restaurant options for lunch.
Stops
Mělník Chateau 1 h 30 min
Mělník Chateau stands on a cliff at the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe rivers, on a site occupied since at least the 9th century — first as a Přemyslid royal residence, later as the property of the Bohemian queens. The current Baroque and Renaissance château belongs to the Lobkowicz family and remains in private ownership, with a guided tour through richly furnished rooms and a collection of Baroque paintings that fills the state apartments.
The château’s working wine cellar produces Pinot Noir and Riesling from the terraced vineyards visible from the terrace — tasting is available without booking. Below the château, inside the Church of St. Peter and Paul, the crypt ossuary holds the skeletal remains of approximately 10,000 people stored there after medieval plague epidemics overwhelmed the burial ground. Less theatrically arranged than Kutná Hora, the Mělník ossuary has a rawer quality that many visitors find more affecting. The river confluence panorama from the château terrace on a clear day — watching two great rivers merge below the vineyards — is one of the finest views within an hour of Prague.
Kokořín Castle 1 h
Kokořín Castle is invisible until you round the final bend of the forest valley — the sandstone walls of the Kokořínsko landscape close around the path, the trees overhead block the light, and then the towers appear without warning. This approach is not accidental: the 14th-century founders chose the site precisely because the narrow valley made the castle nearly impossible to attack from the front.
Founded under King John of Bohemia, the castle passed through several noble families before falling into ruin after the Thirty Years’ War. It remained a romantic forest ruin until 1894, when Václav Špaček began a meticulous restoration that lasted over two decades, rebuilding the towers and residential quarters in a convincing late-Gothic style. The central tower (42 metres) can be climbed for a view across the surrounding sandstone landscape; the knights’ hall and preserved prison are part of the interior tour. The Protected Landscape Area surrounding the castle — forested valleys, isolated sandstone formations, and small villages — feels entirely removed from the proximity of Prague, and the contrast with the city makes the journey feel longer and more rewarding than the 45-minute drive suggests.
